Malaysia Airlines has taken another big step in its plan to restructure its finances, with a major codeshare pact agreed with Emirates.
It has agreed to feed passengers through 90 destinations in the US, Europe, the Middle East and Africa via Emirates’ Dubai hub while scrapping more of its own loss making long haul routes.
Emirates will in turn offer its own customers onward flights via Kuala Lumpur on the Malaysia Airlines route network in the Asia Pacific region.
MAB will cut its own direct flights to Paris and Amsterdam next year and end 10 codeshare agreements with other existing partners.
It is seen as a key move to help cut ‘monumental losses,’ chief executive officer Christoph Mueller said.
"Our network architecture is largely complete with this move. It’s a very, very big and important piece in our puzzle," Mueller said.
The MH carrier code will appear on tickets booked to 38 European cities, 38 in the Gulf, Africa and Indian Ocean and 15 US destinations.
This leaves London Heathrow as its sole European route.
Emirates operates five daily flights from Dubai to MAB’s Kuala Lumpur hub.
