Malaysia’s newest airline Rayani Air suspends services

Malaysia’s first Shariah compliant airline Rayani Air has suspended all flight operations following a pilot strike.

Founder Ravi Alagendrran said all operations were halted because of the pilot strike on Friday and other unspecified ‘technical’ issues.

"We apologise to all our passengers. We will take this time to work out the operations and technical issues that have surfaced," he told the Malay Mail.

He did not disclose exactly when the airline would resume flights.

A pilot strike forced the cancellation of three flights from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi, Kota Kinabalu and Kuching on Friday.

The airline only launched services three months ago.

It was recently reprimanded by the transport ministry for issuing hand written boarding passes to passengers.

The Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) has now started an investigation into the company and will review all its procedures.

"The airline must notify the government before suspending or ceasing operations. It cannot be done on their own volition," said deputy transport minister Abdul Aziz Kaprawi.
