Malev joins oneworld after rigorous business review
Hungarian carrier Malev has been formally invited – and accepted – to join the oneworld alliance after achieving the required levels of quality and safety standards.
It has also satisfied alliance officials that it can deliver a full range of customer service and benefits and that its turnaround towards profitability was making “satisfactory progress.”
Work will now begin on connecting the carrier’s IT systems to its fellow alliance members, training employees and bringing processes into line. The integration is expected to take a further 15 months.
The official invitation, and acceptance, by Malev follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the airline and oneworld in May.
Malev chairman Peter Honig said joining oneworld will be a crucial to Malev’s turnaround plan.
“No medium-sized airline can achieve sustainable earnings without partners,” he said.
Chief executive Janos Gonci added: “Being part of oneworld will broaden our network immensely and further improve the services and benefits we can offer our customers. We also believe we can contribute significantly in value to oneworld through the addition of our strong central and south-east European network.”
Oneworld said the addition of Malev, which is almost wholly owned by the Hungarian government and operates 29 aircraft to 35 countries, will give the alliance a stronger presence in central and eastern Europe.
