Maui tourist arrivals plummeted last month
Hawaii tourist arrivals fell sharply on Maui in August in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires.
Visitor arrivals plummeted almost 60%.
Tourism related spending fell 49% for the month.
The wildfires which destroyed most of Laihana were the deadliest in over a century.
A total of 112,000 visited in August, which is the lowest since early 2021.
An average three flights a day were scrapped to Hawaii as a result of the wildfire and subsequent closure of West Maui.
While the remainder of Maui remained open, officials’ messaging was confusing, meaning there were many trip cancellations to areas not affected.
Many travelers in Maui at the time of the wildfire moved to Oahu, Kauai or Hawaii island, while some simply cut short their trip.
All three islands saw a year-on-year increase in visitor numbers.
Overall, Hawaii tourist arrivals reached 769,000 last month, down about 7% on 2022.
