Melbourne Airport surpasses pre-Covid international capacity

Melbourne Airport has now exceeded 100% of pre-pandemic capacity in the for international flights.
It is the first state capital airport in Australia to do so.
This month more than 1.31 million seats will be available for international passengers to and from Melbourne Airport, which represents 101% of the 1.29 million seats available in 2019.
Melbourne Airport welcomed back Aircalin for the first time in more than three years with the airline resuming services between Melbourne and Noumea.
Aircalin will operate three flights per week from Melbourne to Noumea on new Airbus A320Neo aircraft.
Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said this is the culmination of years of hard work.
“It’s a credit to the team that two years after the Australian border reopened, we are the nation’s first airport to exceed pre-pandemic international capacity,” she said.
“This result was only made possible because of our close partnership with the Victorian government.”
“The return of Aircalin means we are back to our pre-pandemic level of 36 international airlines flying to Melbourne Airport.”
About 10% of Melbourne Airport’s current international capacity is being operated by new airlines or on new routes.

A few observations of Qantas ( I am a retired travel agent with 60 experience): 1. Qantas slashes/downgrades Melbourne international direct flights cf pre Covid. LAX preCovid Daily A380; now only 2 per week A380.. B787 has no first class, limited business, economy. 2. SIN: preCovid Daily A380 to connect with QF001 SYD/LHR (see below) 3. QF009 MEL/PER/LHR enables one plane service. QF is deleting MEL/PER Also see below) MEL pax must take domestic to SIN and domestic to PER. 4. TYO (HND) QF doubling SYD/HND flights forcing MEL/HND QF to TYO NRT some 100 KM out M EL/BKK, SEL, no QF flights; must go domestic to SYD & suffer horrible bus ride to.from International terminal. Also no QF flights MEL to POM, HNR, VLI, NOU, Nad (FJ have twice DAILY MEL/NAN in A330 wide bodied. Not even MEL/Norfolk Island direct flights. I once flew NLK/MEL direct- almost 100% The douzie in MEL/JNB MEL pax must go domestic up to SYD departing around 6 or 7 AM; transfer by bus as above then join QF SYD/JHB that invararly fllys right over MEL around 11AM, some 4 to 5 hours later! No wonder MEL pax prefer SQ via SIN. SQ and Etihad, Qatar love QF haters o MEL pax. Do QF realise MEL has now more people than SYD.
