Melbourne to end four-month lockdown

Saturday, 26 Oct, 2020 0

The Melbourne lockdown will finally come to an end at midnight, as zero cases were reported on Monday.

Stay-at-home orders for residents will be lifted from midnight, and other restrictions will be eased over the coming days.

It was the first day of no new cases since early June.

Parts of the city had been under lockdown for more than four months.

"We haven’t had a zero case day for a long time, which is why it is emotional, because people have been through a lot. People have done amazing things, [shown] extraordinary acts of kindness and commitment and courage," said Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews.

Andrews said some restrictions will remain, such as in-home gatherings and face masks in public places will remain mandatory.

The Premier urged companies to continue allowing employees to work from home where possible.

Pubs, hotels and restaurants can reopen from Wednesday.

The 25-km travel limit will still be enforced until 8 November.

"We want to reach Covid normal by Christmas and right now, we’re on track to do that," Andrews added.

"But this virus is not going away. It is going to continue to be a feature of our lives every day until a vaccine turns up."
