More than towels being taken from hotels.
Hotel guests across the US are helping themselves to more than just complimentary toiletries, with travelers stealing as much as $100 million a year, according to the American Hotel & lodging Association.
Thefts vary according to the geographic location of a hotel in any city, with some hotels cutting back on theft with beefed up security forces and others relying more on background checks and drug tests to better screen employees.
“Gone are the days when an individual could easily convince a housekeeping employee to open a room door under the guise that he or she lost the key,” says the New York Times.
Some hotels report the most commonly stolen items are decorative and individualized bed pillows.
That’s the case at the Doubletree Hotel Pittsburgh Airport where the pillows are stitched with the words “Sweet Dreams.”
