New Greenland international airport opens
International tourism and air connectivity have received a big boost this week with the opening of Nuuk’s new international airport.
It marks the first of three Greenlandic airports opening between now and 2026.
New airports will open in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq in South Greenland by the end of 2026.
This gives travelers access to most parts of Greenland within about 90 minutes.
The new airports initially will be operated by existing air carriers Air Greenland and Icelandair but allow for opportunities for new airlines and more flights to Greenland.
With the opening of the new international airport, direct flights to Nuuk will be available via jet plane between Nuuk and Copenhagen, Denmark, for the very first time.
From this winter, five weekly flights from Nuuk to Copenhagen will operate, increasing to six during the holiday season, and peaking at eight during the summer.
Also, Air Greenland will operate a direct weekly departure between Nuuk and Aalborg during the summer time.
The weekly departure between Nuuk and Billund will continue on a seasonal basis, from April to October.
