New Orleans Hard Rock Hotel demolition delayed
The partially collapsed Hard Rock Hotel will remain an unwanted feature on the New Orleans skyline for many more months to come.
The developers have pushed back the demolition of the site by several months.
Instead of starting work next month as was previously planned, it will not start now until May 7, meaning it won’t be completed until December 2020.
The developer says it underestimated the amount of manpower and time needed to make the site safe ahead of demolition work.
This further delay has angered city officials.
New Orleans Fire Superintendent Tim McConnell said city officials are unhappy with the extended timeline and have been pressuring the developer to speed things up.
"It is their responsibility to do this. Currently, the plan that they have submitted is the plan that’s going forward. We have asked them to shorten the timeline. You can understand why this gives us pause because of the large number of events that we have," said McConnell.
Two adjacent buildings owned by the developer may also need to be demolished.
