New tourist literacy program could be start of national movement

A former Washington Post reporter launched a movement to collect books from tourists and donate them to the public libraries in the small country of Belize, starting a movement that could spread to other nations

"While books are taken for granted in the US, many visitors don’t realize that they are truly difficult to come by here," said Chris Crowell, owner of the Cotton Tree Lodge in Belize.

The program founded by Jackie Spinner, who is also an author, is known as “Angel Says: Read.”

"The libraries in Belize genuinely need books, and this is an easy way for tourists to help promote literacy, an apolitical cause we all can support," said Spinner, who is using Belize to launch what she hopes will be a global literacy effort.

Belize is a country of about 300,000 people on the Caribbean coast, nestled between Mexico and Guatemala.
