New tsunami fears revealed by seismologists
Seismologists have reportedly predicted that the earthquake that caused the Boxing Day tsunami may yet cause more devastation.
Scientists have stated that the huge earthquake has significantly increased the chances of another big movement in the earth’s crust near the island of Sumatra, parts of which were devastated by the disaster.
According to The Guardian, scientists have stopped short of predicting when another such earthquake might happen, but point out that previous “coupled earthquakes” have taken place within 12 months of each other.
John McCloskey, of the University of Ulster, is quoted as saying: “Many of us are brought up to understand hazard as whenever you’ve had your bit of bad luck it doesn’t happen again – lightning never strikes twice.
“These are very significant and extensive increases in stress. We cannot say for certain it will result in an earthquake but it is the biggest stress increase over a large area that we have measured since se started doing this research.”
However, Nick Ambraseys, of Imperial College, London, adds: “There is nothing in the new study that enables, with any degree of accuracy, the prediction of the immediacy of the next earthquake. False alarms and inaccurate timing could create more problems than already exist.”
