New York Metro airports a mess after slush storm
A whirl of slush, snow and rain called a Nor’easter hit the battered New York Metropolitan area yesterday cancelling more flights and keeping travelers on their toes looking for ways in and out of a city in recovery from Hurricane Sandy last week. The website, Flightaware.com said in a statement to the press that cancellations should not last past Thursday morning. Total cancellations as of midnight on Wednesday were 1,709 with most of the affected flights at Newark Liberty International Airport.
The FAA, which is still working 24 hours a day restoring navigational and other equipment damaged at JFK, LaGuardia and Newark during Sandy, sidetracked the Nor’easter by working with airlines to to identify runway arrival and departure patterns allowing pilots to use runways with working navigational aids at all of the airports in low visibility conditions.
Travelers like CNN’s Richard Quest (Quest Means Business) Tweeted their travails.
Quest, who was supposed to travel from Atlanta to New York yesterday chose the Amtrak option, tweeting to his followers:
I am now on board #amtrak Crescent train heading from Atlanta to NY to avoid delay from storm. Signature Steak for dinner in diner!
