The trend for bidding for upgrades is coming to the cruise industry.
Norwegian Cruise Line is launching the new Upgrade Advantage program, enabling guests to bid for upgrades once they have paid in full for the original booking.
It will be rolled out in early February on the Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Epic and Pride of America.
Customers will receive an email invite to bid for an upgrade and travel agents will earn commission.
Guests are able to revise or cancel their bid offer up to two days prior to sail date.
The automated system was trialed during a two-month beta test with travel agents and has garnered positive results and feedback.
Upgrade bidding is gaining traction with airlines and hotel companies but this is a first for a cruise line.
