Outback launch for new jet
A potential successor for the Concorde has been launched in South Australia’s outback.
According to a Defence Department spokesman, the launch took place from the Woomera rocket range at 7am (CST) but no further information would be released until later on Monday.
AFP agency reported the launch was a success.
The prototype aircraft, designed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, could eventually cut hours off trans-pacific and around-the-world voyages.
It is possible the jet could one day make the trip from Tokyo to New York in just under six hours – less than half the current time.
A joint research project by Japan and France , data from the test will be used to develp the next generation of supersonic jet.
If built, the full size version of the new jet would three times as many passengers as the Concorde, up to 300 – and travel at twice the speed of sound.
