Palma 365, the tourism board for the capital of the Balearic Islands, has launched an initiative designed to diffuse tourism across the city.
It is producing a catalogue to raise the profile of emblematic shops in the city to encourage tourists to discover Palma’s authentic side.
Shops must have either opened more than 75 years ago, showcase traditional trades of the Balearic Islands, or must be housed in a heritage building.
Selected to showcase traditional Mallorcan trades such as ceramics, glass-making and shoe-making, they will also benefit from tax benefits.
The initiative is part of Palma 365’s strategy to develop a sustainable year-round tourism model to benefits local communities.
It is hoped the scheme will help diffuse tourism across the city during peak season.
Pedro Homar, general director of Fundacion Turismo Palma 365, said: "It is important to us that we showcase the rich culture and history of the city, which is largely portrayed by the traditional shops and local trades.
"As such, we will continue to work with our suppliers to preserve these elements of cultural heritage and to encourage tourists to visit them when travelling to Palma."
The catalogue will be available online next month.
