Passengers survive in Air France crash

Wednesday, 3 August 20053 min read

All 297 passengers and 12 crew survived when an Air France aircraft skidded off a runway at Toronto airport and burst into flames.

Flight 358 from Paris landed in stormy weather at Pearson airport last night and overshot the runway by 200 yards before careering into a ravine.

It is believed all people on board, which included seven Britons, were evacuated before the fire broke out although 24 were treated for minor injuries. The blaze took two hours to contain.

It is unclear exactly what caused the accident although the airport had been on red alert most of the day because of the weather conditions. Witnesses report the power went out just before landing, raising the possibility the aircraft was struck by lightening.

Air accident investigators are probing the wreckage.

The crash was the first major crash on an Airbus A340-300 since the model took to the air in 1991.
