Pensioner sues BA over lack of legroom
A pensioner is reportedly suing British Airways for £3,000 for the “pain and suffering” caused by the fact that he did not have enough legroom.
According to the Daily Mail, 73-year-old Donovan Winter, who stands 6ft 3in tall, will today argue that the airline’s failure to provide enough space infringes his human rights under EU regulations.
The newspaper reports that Mr Winter requested extra legroom on a flight from London to Singapore and, though the request was logged, he was given a seat with the standard 31 inches of space. A similar request on a later flight from Los Angeles was also denied.
Mr Winter reportedly told the newspaper: “BA had a note of my request for extra legroom, which it completely disregarded. I believe this to be an infringement of my human rights under EU law. There is a ruling that says airlines must provide suitable, adequate accommodation. In my case, they failed to do so. There is no way I could have sat in that seat for 13 hours.”
A British Airways spokesman reportedly said the carrier would “vigorously” defend the claim, adding: “We cannot guarantee passengers will have a particular seat. We try to do everything we can but these are extremely popular requests.”
