Peter Long named president of FHA
Peter Long, chief executive of TUI Travel, is to be the new president of the Family Holiday Association charity.
TUI Travel has had a long association with the FHA and is the charity’s largest corporate sponsor.
Long will replace current president Lady Mary Mumford at the charity which helps disadvantaged families enjoy a UK holiday.
Commenting on his new role, he said: "The FHA is very effective and drives the agenda in terms of social tourism. It’s already highly regarded and I will do all I can to make it even more successful.
"I guess I can use a lot of contacts throughout the industry and with the Government to raise the profile and raise further funds for the charity.
"Over the years we’ve been actively involved and I’ve visited some of the schools. They are just wonderful children who need to be given a break."
He added: "I am very excited. I absolutely understand and believe in the family and family values with three sons and four grandchildren.
"The family market is very important to us but more people would like to go on holiday that can’t – whether it’s for recharging the batteries or getting away from the day to day routine, building sandcastles or having a picnic.
"We take it for granted that everyone is mobile, but some are not."
Alison Rice, newly-appointed chair of trustees at the charity said, "The staff and trustees at the Family Holiday Association are delighted that Peter has taken this important role. As President, he will be the most senior member of the team and the charity’s most important public face."
Peter Long’s first engagement will be making a keynote address at the President’s Reception to be held at the charity’s Holidays Matter conference at the Royal Society in London on October 24.
FHA, founded 38 years ago, is funded solely by donations from the public and the tourism industry and helps over 8000 children and their families have a simple UK break each year and escape the stresses of bereavement, poverty, chronic illness, inadequate housing or domestic violence.
