Beautiful terrirory and vineyards of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato appointed World Heritage Sites by UNESCO

The Association Paesaggi Vitivinicoli of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato has announced that the Paesaggi Vitivinicoli of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites

The landscapes of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato were included among the World Heritage cultural sites

The initiative of Paesaggi Vitivinicoli of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato is a project started in 2003, from an initial proposal of the Canelli territory who wanted to exploit the underground ‘Cathedrals of wine’ in the area.

The initiative was promoted by Regione Piemonte, Province of Alessandria, Asti and Cuneo and the Direzione Regionale per i Beni Culturali e il Paesaggio, with the supervision of Ministero per i Beni e le AttivitaÌ€ Culturali and of Ministero delle Politiche Agricole, Alimentari e Forestali and the technical support of SiTI (Institute of Territorial Systems for Innovation – Istituto Superiore sui Sistemi Territoriali per l’Innovazione).

Selected areas represent the outstanding quality of the wine, the Piedmont landscape and its deep and living wine culture. It is a wide buffer zone of approximately 76.000 hectares, which includes the six components and involves more than 100 municipalities.

The wine territories cover an area that extends over 10780 hectares of land, with 6 main components. The World Heritage Sites are:

  • Langa of Barolo
  • The Hills of Barbaresco
  • The Castle of Grinzane Cavour
  • Canelli and Asti Spumante
  • Nizza Monferrato and Barbera
  • Monferrato of Infernot

Luigi Barbero, President Ente Turismo Alba Bra Langhe Roero, Maria Teresa Armosino, President of the ATL of Asti and Sergio Guglielmero, President of the Tourist Agency of Alessandria, said:

"We worked together for so long and intensely – on visions and projects in common – to achieve this goal, that today our three territorial Agencies share the same feeling of satisfaction and joy this designation. This is not a point of arrival, but of departure. We wish, to transmit, with pride and love for our places (where the work of t man and the great culture of working the land and the conservation of landscape have created excellence). Our territory is not consumed, it lives: in contact with its people, in the breath of its landscape, in enjoying its flavours, breathing its history. We are ready".

"We are delighted with this worldwide recognition" Said Gianfranco Comaschi, President, Annalisa Conti, Vice President, and Roberto Cerrato, President of the Associazione Paesaggi Vitivinicoli Langhe-Roero and Monferrato. "The continuous search of improvement of the production cycle has led, and still leads, the production of excellent and quality international wines – such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Asti Spumante and Barbera d’Asti, thanks to a rich heritage of knowledge and techniques, based on the deep knowledge of the grape varieties grown here for centuries (Nebbiolo, Moscato Bianco, Barbera) and their ability to adapt to environmental conditions."
