Planned convention center spawns hotel spike in Nashville
There’s a reason four new hotels are under construction in downtown Nashville with developers looking at a dozen more sites. The simple explanation: A US$585 million convention center due to open next year.
The adjacent 21-story, 600-room Omni Hotel now under construction will not accommodate the anticipated demand, according to Butch Spyridon, president of the local CVB.
One of those hotels is likely to be a 350- to 450-room high-rise within three blocks of the Music City Center, said Butch Spyridon, president of the visitors bureau.
“The void has caused a buzz among hotel developers,” writes the Tennessean.
Tourist traffic has surpassed expectations for more than a year and a half..
June and October are the busiest months for tourism, when Davidson County’s 24,000 rooms fill up the fastest and run at their peak rates, according to Spyridon.
As further evidence of the demand, both the Hilton downtown and the Renaissance have scaled back on the number of group-rate blocks they will accommodate, Spyridon said.
“This means the chains know tourist traffic is strong enough downtown that they will be able to sell the rooms at non-discounted rates,” writes the newspaper.
In addition to the Omni, also in the works in the downtown core is a 13-story, 255-room Hyatt Place hotel, which is expected to break ground in the next three months.
