Protestors now targeting Amsterdam cruise calls

The Dutch arm of activism group Extinction Rebellion is now targeting cruise ships in Amsterdam.

In recent days it has been able to temporarily block two ships entering the city.

Extinction Rebellion is calling on a separate cruise tax to help fund development of alternative low emission fuels.

The group chained and glued themselves to a bridge at Ijmuiden locks which is the access point for cruise ships to enter Amsterdam.

They were successful in stopping Royal Caribbean cruise ship Jewel of the Seas from entering Amsterdam.

The ship instead docked at a terminal in Ijmuiden and cruise guests were bussed into Amsterdam.

“Extinction Rebellion demands an immediate and total stop to the destructive cruise industry,” the group said.

Police were called but decided against forcibly removing them.

A day later, they also blocked Regent’s Seven Seas Mariner ship at the same location.

This time, police took action to remove the protestors.

Amsterdam city officials recently announced plans to limit cruise ship traffic and potentially relocating ships to a dock outside the city.

It wants all visiting ships to connect to shore power within the next two years.
