Royal Caribbean has announced the successful completion of a multi-year shore excursion sustainability program.
Royal Caribbean’s Save the Waves program has verified 70 operators which have met the international standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
The line partnered with Sustainable Travel International to develop the Sustainable Tourism Education Program’s (STEP) Sustainable Shore Excursion Standard.
It uses specific criteria to assess providers offering high quality shore excursions that also manage environmental impacts and support the local communities they operate in.
"We want to do our part to make sure that these destinations continue to thrive," said Roberta Jacoby, managing director, global tour operations, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.
"We are incredibly proud of the 70 tour operators that have been with us on this journey which first started in 2010."
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council works with global tourism stakeholders, from UN agencies, tour companies, hotels, DMOs and local communities, to raise awareness and help companies reach best practices in sustainable tourism.
