Shanghai smog leads to warning

Tuesday, 27 May 20143 min read

Authorities in Shanghai have warned children and the elderly to stay indoors as smog continues to engulf the city.

Pollution levels have reached seven times the levels recommended by the World Health Organisation, according to Bloomberg.

In December last year, pollution levels in Shanghai reached the highest level on the scale, leading to a 30% rise in patients visiting respiratory departments.

The Chinese government has declared a war on smog with an action plan that includes replacing coal-fired boilers and furnaces.
