Just two weeks after United Airlines began flying direct from San Francisco to Singapore, the Lion City’s flag carrier is plans to give United some stiff competition on the route.
Singapore Airlines will begin flying daily to San Francisco from October 23 on new Airbus A350-900 jets.
"Nonstop operations are critical for us. They are a staple for corporate travel that we’ve served for many years," said Singapore Air spokesman James Boyd.
It will mark the first nonstop flights to the US for three years when it retired its long range Airbus A340 planes.
Currently it routes US-bound passengers through hubs such as Frankfurt, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo.
United began flying to Singapore this month and at nearly 16 hours duration, is the longest flight for a US airline, United says.
United and Singapore Air are both Star Alliance members but will not codeshare on the route.
