Singapore Airlines and Japan’s All Nippon Airways formally announced plans for a joint venture.
The two airlines inked a JV agreement which will allow them to coordinate schedules, capacity and fare pricing on Singapore-Japan and other regional routes.
The agreement scope would extend to include flights to Malaysia, Indonesia, India and Australia.
"Through this partnership, customers would be able to enjoy increased flight frequencies and travel conveniences, and access the strong connectivity at both the Singapore and Tokyo air hubs," said Singapore Air CEO Goh Choon Phong.
"We expect that this joint venture will allow us to promote Japan even more and to bring about more traffic."
Around 1.3 million passengers fly between Japan and Singapore annually.
The two airlines first established a codesharing agreement 15 years ago.
SIA group airlines, Singapore Air, SilkAir and Scoot currently operate 108 weekly flights to seven cities in Japan.
The joint venture proposal requires government approvals and could take up to two years before it officially launches.
