Singapore Airlines backs down on plan to charge credit card fees

Monday, 8 January 20183 min read

Singapore Airlines has backtracked on a plan to impose a credit card surcharge on fligt tickets issued in Singapore.

The U-turn comes just a day after announcing the credit card service fee would be effective from January 20.

It planned to charge a 1.3% fee capped at a maximum of S$50 per passenger for its new ‘lite’ economy fares.

It gave no specific reason for the change of heart although it had not gone down well with customers or sales agents.

"Following a further review Singapore Airlines will not be proceeding with the implementation of the CCSF," it said in a circular to all agents.

SIA does impose credit card service fees in other markets including flights departing from Australia, New Zealand and UK.

Numerous other carriers in the region impose service fees for credit card bookings including the likes of AirAsia, Jetstar and Qantas.
