Ski Club finds solution to guiding ban in France

The Ski Club of Great Britain has teamed up with ski school Evolution 2 to offer a new instructor-led guiding service for their members in France.

The partnership means it will be able to offer members the services of fully-qualified instructors under French law who will be able to lead, guide and instruct.

In 2013, a French court ruled that only fully qualified snow sports instructors would be allowed to guide skiers around the slopes.

This forced British tour operators to suspend their social skiing days where unqualified resort staff would join clients for a morning or afternoon skiing to help them find their way around.

It also forced the Ski Club of Great Britain to replace its ‘Leading’ service – volunteers who skied and socialized with other members – with a new Ambassadors club, where volunteers socialized but did not ski.

Ski Club CEO Frank McCusker, said: "We are determined to continue to fight our status in the French courts but we see this as a hugely positive solution in the interim for our members to enjoy the full benefits of the Ski Club."

The new partnership, which will operate in 11 French resorts, will see instructors from Evolution 2 offering a regular ski programme of at least three sessions a week designed to suit a variety of member standards, adapted to their needs and snow conditions.

The Ski Club said there would be no changes to the Leader programmes that the Ski Club operates as part of their Freshtracks holidays and in the other 17 resorts across Europe and North America.
