Southwest Airlines plans to begin new routes to Mexican vacation destinations from Los Angeles.
The Dallas based carrier has applied for twice a day flights to Cancun and Los Cabos, and a daily service to Puerto Vallarta from LAX.
Southwest’s application has requested ‘extra-bilateral authority’ from the US department of transportation to allow the airline to market and sell seats for an interim period while the US DOT and Mexican authorities bring into force a new aviation agreement between the two countries.
"We’ve committed aircraft resources to serve these important trans-border routes at the start of the winter season and are asking that Southwest be allowed to add its low-fare service to benefit consumers in the US and Mexico," said Gary Kelly, CEO of Southwest Airlines.
Southwest flies internationally from LAX to Liberia, Costa Rica and also serves four Mexican cities from several cities in the US.
The new US-Mexico air treaty recently signed will potentially give carriers unlimited routes and frequencies between the two countries.
