Southwest Airlines has reportedly handed out cheques for $5,000 to passengers on Flight 1380, which killed one person after an engine explosion.

CNN reports at least three passengers have received the payout accompanied with a letter expressing ‘sincere apologies’ for the incident which had been earlier described by a passenger as ’25 minutes of sustained fear.’

A letter addressed to passenger Kamau Siwatu said: "We value you as our customer and hope you will allow us another opportunity to restore your confidence in Southwest as the airline you can count on for your travel needs.

"In this spirit, we are sending you a check [sic] in the amount of $5,000 to cover any of your immediate financial needs."

CNN says at least two others received similar letters.

In addition to the cheques, passengers get a $1,000 travel voucher.

The NTSB said cracks found on a fan blade was more than likely due to metal fatigue.

The agency is still investigating and may not release a full report for up to a year.

Flying debris from the engine damaged the fuselage and shattered a window.

Passenger Jennifer Riordan was almost sucked out of the aircraft and later died of her injuries.
