Spy law protects passengers

Tuesday, 14 December 20043 min read

A small part of the massive spy-agency overhaul passed by Congress provides limited protection for passengers holding tickets for failed airlines.

The provision states that healthy carriers must honor tickets from failed carriers on a space-available basis until next November.

Re-booking fees are limited to $50 roundtrip. Ticket holders have 60 days from the time an airline stops flying to book with another carrier.

David Stempler, president of the Air Travelers Association, said the law provides limited help because passengers will have to rely on limited standby tickets.

“It provides some help, but it’s not the saving grace,” he said.

The law also does not provide protection for frequent-flier award tickets.
