Strikes force Alitalia to cancel around 250 flights today

Thursday, 12 Dec, 2019 0

Alitalia has cancelled around 250 flights today (December 13) due to 24-hour air transport sector strikes by some Italian trade unions.

EasyJet also warned of disrpution and advised all passengers flying to or from Italy today to check the status of their flight.

"Although this is outside of our control we would like to assure them that we are doing all possible to minimise any potential disruption as a result of the industrial action," said an easyJet spokesman.

Alitalia reassured customers that flights set to operate during the peak times between 7am to 10am and from 6pm to 9pm will operate as scheduled.

Some flights last night and in the early morning of Saturday are also affected.

The airline said it will be operating bigger aircraft on domestic and international routes so it can rebook passengers affected by cancellations onto the first available flights on the same day.

It said this means half of the affected travellers will fly on the day they were initially booked to fly.

Customers are advised to check the status of their flights before going to the airport on alitalia.com website, or calling the airline at the toll-free number 800.65.00.55 (within Italy), at +39 06.65649 (from overseas), or contacting the travel agency where the ticket was bought.

Those affected by a cancellation or schedule change can rebook their travel at no additional cost or penalty, or ask for a full ticket refund (only if the flight is cancelled or the delay on departure exceeds 5 hours) by 18 December.
