SUCCESSFUL CLIMATE CHANGE AND TOURISM SEMINAR TO BE ROLLED-OUT GLOBALLY
In an exclusive interview with VISION on Sustainable Tourism, Dr Murray Simpson revealed that the Climate Change and Tourism Seminar held jointly by Oxford University Centre for the Environment and global tourism and climate change bodies was to be rolled out globally.
The seminar was took place at Balliol College, Oxford on April 8th to 10th and was held by OUCE together with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), UNWTO and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). Some 25 participants from tourism organisations came from all over the world to participate.
Dr Simpson, who had a background as an adventure travel entrepreneur before returning to academia, said that the seminar attracted over 120 applications to participate and was still receiving requests well after the closing date. To ensure the seminar’s effectiveness, only 25 places were available.
Said Dr Simpson, “Climate Change and poverty are the biggest issues of our time. I’m working with a group of 6 researchers around the globe who are pre-eminent in the field of climate change and tourism. UNEP asked me to arrange the seminar at Oxford so that we could do something pragmatic and practical. We produced a publication that would be the basis for this seminar and the series of regional seminars that will now follow.â€
“Participants from all over the globe attended, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kenya, Egypt, Central America, Caribbean and Sri Lanka. The working seminars covered, climate science, vulnerability, adaptive capacity, adaptation strategies, mitigation, mitigation policies, so that governments and organisations could see a way to mitigate emissions and become carbon neutral. We certainly packed a lot of information into 3 days! “
The seminar Feedback was phenomenal and set up an excellent position to go forward. “The ‘Big Messages’, said Dr Simpson… “Climate Change can be a threat, but it also presents some opportunities, we shouldn’t be negative about everything, there are ways that we can deal with it through adaptation and mitigation. Cross ministerial co-operation and inter ministerial co-operation, working with the industry, communities and other stakeholders is of fundamental importance.â€
