Friday, 30 Aug, 2002 0

A man was arrested in Sweden yesterday for attempting to carry a handgun onto a Ryanair UK-bound flight.

Security staff at Stockholm Vasteras Airport found a handgun in the hand luggage of a passenger who was trying to board a Ryanair flight to London Stansted.

All the passengers were interviewed and the Boeing 737-800 aircraft searched before 164 passengers were allowed to board. The plane arrived at Stansted late last night. Ryanair apologised to the passengers for the delay, and commended the prompt action of security staff at the Stockholm airport.

According to a report from Reuters, the man was a Swedish citizen of Tunisian origin. He is being investigated on charges of trying to hijack an aircraft.
