A woman has been killed in a shark attack off a popular beach in New South Wales, Australia.

The 63-year-old had been taking her daily swim with a group of friends from the beach to the wharf at Tathra village.

According to the BBC, Christine Armstrong had turned back from the group when she was attacked.

Police said her husband had seen the shape of a shark, which looked to be between three and four metres long.

The beach was closed while boats and helicopters searched for her body, but the search was later called off due to bad weather.

ABC News reported that partial human remains had been found but had not yet been confirmed as linked to the missing woman.

The victim’s family said in a statement that she had been swimming at the beach for 14 years.

Tathra village is on the Sapphire Coast, a 5hr 45min drive south of Sydney along the Princess Highway.
