Thai Airways to cut staff, long haul routes

Thailand’s struggling flag carrier will suspend flights to the US and cut more than 1,000 jobs through voluntary retirement this year in a bid to stem losses.

Thai Airways president Jarumporn Chotikasathein said the Bangkok to Los Angeles route has incurred big losses and will be shelved for the time being, along with flights to Rome.

Aircraft and manpower will instead be redeployed on its profitable routes to London and Frankfurt.

The airline will cut 1,401 jobs after posting a net loss of 15.6 billion baht ($445 million) last year.

Schedule changes which will also include capacity cuts on its Kolkata, India route, will take effect from October, the airline said.

Thai’s restructuring plan calls for a reduction in capacity and operating costs of about 20% in the next two years.

It also plans to sell off some aircraft.
