The cruise ship now landing at Kai Tak
Hong Kong’s new US$1 billion Kai Tak Cruise Terminal on Victoria Harbour will open in June this year.
Designed by Lord Norman Foster, the terminal is situated on the site of the runway of Hong Kong’s former Kai Tak Airport.
Each of the two berths (the second will open mid-2014)
will accommodate the world’s biggest cruise vessels, while the three-story terminal building will be able to clear 3,000 passengers per hour through immigration and customs channels.
The flexible design will incorporate spaces suitable for performances, events and exhibitions, supported by a variety of restaurants and shops.
The sustainable design also combines energy saving measures, as well as generating power from renewable sources and making use of recycled rainwater for cooling.
Kenneth Wong, Hong Kong Tourism Board’s general manager of MICE and Cruise, said the new terminal would give arriving guests "a stunning first impression of an exciting port of call".
