Editor’s Note
Dear TravelMole Member
First Choice may be the first operator to announce it is
introduce a GBP 5 levy for Summer 2002, but it is unlikely to be
the only one, despite the fact that the DTI has decided not to
change the rules governing surcharges.
ABTA made a strong case for the introduction of tightly
controlled surcharges at its convention in Lisbon – saying it
was better for a customer to have to pay an extra £5 or so
before going on holiday than to be stranded overseas because an
operator has gone out of business. However, as the DTI ruling
shows, surcharges are highly unpopular with the travelling
public and are likely to be resisted at every turn.
Best wishes
Richard Hammond
