Editor’s Note
Dear TravelMole Member
It is possible to make one prediction for the industry in 2002 –
that further consolidation is inevitable. However, it is less
easy to say who the winners and losers will be. The takeover of
Expedia by USA Networks looked almost certain to be completed by
the end of the year, but has now been thrown into disarray by
USA’s entertainment deal with Vivendi Universal.
And pundits were also predicting that the British Airways and
American Airlines alliance was certain to move forward, but the
latest ruling by the US Justice department seems to have dealt
those plans a serious blow.
P&O Princess insists that it is full steam ahead for its merger
with Royal Caribbean, but as the Expedia and BA experience
shows, things are not always that simple.
Best wishes
Richard Hammond
