EDITOR’S NOTE
It is often said that what happens in America comes to the UK
travel industry two or three years later. If so, agents in the
UK will be watching how events unfold in the US with some
trepidation. The six largest carriers in the States have all
announced they will no longer pay base commissions to agents,
arguing that they cannot afford it in the post September 11
environment.

Delta was the first airline to make the announcement, arguing
that agents have to adapt to the new “market reality” which
makes the cost of distribution through electronic channels “much
lower than traditional means.” But is this really true? Or
should airlines, as the American Society of Travel Agents
argues, determine a fulfilment fee structure to cover the real
costs involved in distributing a ticket?

9. Site of the Week: Golfbreaks.com
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are lots of golfers in the trade who we thought would
appreciate a golf-related travel site, so this week we have
taken a look at Golfbreaks.com.
TravelMole’s reviewer Adrian Mann says: “The main purpose of
this site is to search for and book golf breaks or holidays….
It’s a very focused offering – there’s no straying off into non-
golf topics, or padding with irrelevant detail or information.
There are links to other sites where appropriate, for instance
flights through cheapflights.com, or car hire. The whole site is
well constructed – I didn’t find a single bad link or missing
image – and is very easy to navigate and find what your after.”
staff be both cost effective and productive? Specialist
recruitment consultant New Frontiers debates the advantages and
disadvantages of recruiting temps as a profitable staffing
strategy.
