Tourist faces legal action over shark attack claims
A British tourist is reportedly facing legal action from a South African diving business following claims that he exaggerated an attack by a great white shark. The Independent reports that White Shark Ecoventures is considering suing Mark Currie, for loss of earnings, after the tourist told his story to the British media. The company is claiming loss of earnings following extensive coverage in newspapers around the world. Currie reportedly said that, after he was lowered into the water in a steel cage, the shark began to ram the cage with its jaws open. He was quoted as saying: “The captain of the boat was bashing the shark on the head with a metal pole, but that just seemed to make it worse. It was thrashing the water in a real frenzy.” However, the company reportedly says that it has taken sworn affidavits from passengers and crew, to the effect that the incident did not take place as portrayed. The Independent reports that, while Currie has not been in contact with White Shark Ecoventures, he has heard that the firm’s co-owner Marietta Hopley, is planning legal action. He is quoted as saying: “The shark attacked the cage and everything that happened was true – and I’ve got photos to prove it, so I don’t know what she could sue me for.” The newspaper quotes shark experts as saying that, even though the incident may have been terrifying, the shark was probably acting more out of curiosity rather than through a desire to attack and eat the person inside the cage.
