Tourists stranded in Hawaii after historic flooding

Tuesday, 17 April 20183 min read

Hawaiian Airlines waived change fees for passengers with booked flights after the worst floods in years in Hawaii caused the evacuations of residents and stranded tourists.

Areas remain impassable after the weekend’s torrential rains as roads are still closed, which forced the evacuation of more than 100 people by helicopter in Kauai.

Large landslides have blocked the Kuhio Highway on the north shore, and dozens of tourists were forced to stay overnight at a makeshift shelter in a school near Hanalei.

It was also reported up to 30 campers were stranded in the Napali Coast State Wilderness Park on Monday and the Coast Guard located about 30 hikers on Kalalau Beach.

The National Weather Service recorded 28.1 inches of rainfall over 24 hours in Hanalei, which is officially just shy of the all-time record.

"It’s highly likely that the record was broken by heavy rainfall after the gauge stopped recording," said meteorologist Chevy Chevalier.

Several homes were washed away but there were no reports of major injury or death yet.

Gov. David Ige earlier declared a state of emergency, and although floodwaters have subsided many roads will likely remain closed for the time being.
