The U.S. State Department issued a level two travel advisory for Mexico over continuing fears of violent crime as eight bodies were discovered in various locations in the popular beach resort city of Cancun.
At least two bodies were found dismembered.
None of the murders occurred in Cancun’s hotel zone but the State Department warned US citizens to ‘exercise increased caution in Mexico due to crime.’
It cited crime hotspots across the country and advises travelers not to go to the states of Colima, Guerrero, Michoacn, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas.
Gun violence is mostly targeted in Quintana Roo state but Cancun’s tourist district is not immune to violent crime.
"Shooting incidents injuring or killing bystanders have occurred," the advisory said.
Violence has been on the rise in Cancun and earlier this year there were 14 mostly drug-related homicides in just a day and a half close to tourists attractions.
