Trump considers expanding travel ban
The Trump Administration is mulling expanding the travel ban to include more countries.
According to reports another seven countries – most with Muslim-majority populations – would be added although details of these were redacted in a report seen by the Associated Press..
In an election year the Administration is once again tapping into fears over immigration to secure a second term.
The current ban restricts travelers from Muslim-majority countries Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen as well as North Korea and Venezuela.
The new list comes after the Department of Homeland Security conducted a global review of security and ‘identity management’ for scores of countries.
White House spokesman Hogan Gidley would not confirm plans for expanding the travel ban but said the original ban has help keep the country safer.
"Common sense and national security both dictate that if a country wants to fully participate in US immigration programs, they should also comply with all security and counterterrorism measures."
A new announcement on a potential expansion could come on the third anniversary of the original 2017 executive order, the AP reports, citing sources.
That sudden announcement led to chaos at airports with unsuspecting travelers detained and mass protests, as well as months of legal proceedings.
