TUI Group to create a new forest on Rhodes, Greece

Following the devastating wildfires that swept through Rhodes (Greece) in 2023, a major reforestation effort is helping restore one of the island’s most severely affected areas.

Through the new TUI Forest Rhodes initiative, 80,000 square meters of damaged land surrounding the historic Panagia Ypseni Monastery are being regenerated with thousands of new trees and plants.

The project is funded by the TUI Care Foundation, with support from TUI employees, the Rhodes Co-Lab initiative and donations from TUI guests.

The Greek Orthodox monastery was among the sites hardest hit by the fires, with much of the surrounding vegetation destroyed. Today, it has become a symbol of recovery and renewal.

Working with local partners, the project is introducing olive, carob, cypress and cedar trees selected for their ability to strengthen the ecosystem and provide new habitats for wildlife.

The TUI Forest on Rhodes combines nature conservation with a long-term commitment to the region,” said TUI Group CEO Sebastian Ebel. “The aim is to support the natural regeneration of the landscape and make a sustainable contribution to preserving biodiversity on Rhodes.

He said the initiative demonstrates how cooperation between local stakeholders, organizations and supporters can help communities recover from extreme natural events and safeguard resources for future generations.

The project forms part of the Rhodes Co-Lab, a joint initiative between the South Aegean Region and TUI Group designed to promote more sustainable tourism development on the island. Located close to a protected nature reserve, the reforestation zone is expected to play an important role in restoring habitats for numerous species.

A total of 3,060 trees will be planted, including 2,000 olive trees, 500 carob trees, 500 cypress trees and 60 zizia trees. A new irrigation and fire-protection system is also being installed.

In addition, the South Aegean Regional Government is funding an education and information center that will support environmental awareness programs, volunteer activities and visitor experiences.

Beyond its environmental benefits, TUI Forest Rhodes is expected to deliver economic and social gains. Restoring the landscape will help combat soil erosion, boost biodiversity and improve resilience against future fires.

The initiative is also expected to create or safeguard around 45 jobs. Local communities will benefit from long-term income opportunities through the management of the newly planted olive groves.

Together with local partner Gia Ti Fisi and a network of volunteers, TUI Forest Rhodes aims to give visitors the chance to engage directly with the island’s natural environment and take part in its preservation.
