Two Indonesian passenger planes were involved in a collision adding to growing concerns over safety at the country’s overcrowded airports.
A Wings Air ATR-72 had a wing clipped by a Lion Air Boeing 737 at Medan’s Kualanamu airport, with both planes suffering minor damage.
No injuries were reported but all flight operations were initially halted for about 20 minutes, said airport communications manager Wisnu Budi Setianto.
"All our passengers are safe and no one is injured," said Lion Air Group spokesman Andy Saladin
The Indonesian Air Traffic Controllers Association recently warned of the likelihood of more accidents and tarmac collisions due to the sheer volume of air traffic and an urgent need to increase the number of air traffic controllers and improve their training.
The most urgent need is at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta Airport, the association said, where the number of permitted take off and landings per hour was recently increased.
