Two killed, others injured after falling from theme park slide
Two people were killed and a dozen more injured after a theme park accident in Taiping, Sichuan Province.
The Children’s Garden park is now closed and ‘the person responsible for the business’ has been detained, local authorities said.
Fourteen people including six children fell from the 770-feet long slide which the park claims is the world’s longest.
Two adults were pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.
They reportedly collided while riding in rubber rings and were thrown off the slide during the first day of the Labour Day holiday, with witnesses claiming the ride looked to be overcrowded.
The theme park claims it has 32 different slides.
The park posted a WeChat message saying it was closed for upgrading, without mentioning the accident.
The China theme park market is set to overtake the US next year as the world’s largest.
A recent AECOM industry report suggests China’s theme park attendance will surpass 230 million by 2020.
However, there are questions over whether safety oversight at a local level is keeping pace with the rapid development in the industry.
