Union slams easyJet over pilot sickness ‘corporate bullying’
EasyJet has been criticised for ‘bullying ‘pilots calling in sick.
Pilots union Balpa told easyJet bosses their actions have ‘completely decimated any residual goodwill among your workforce in one fell swoop.’
EasyJet has been arguably hit hardest due to staff sickness causing widespread flight cancellations for weeks.
In an earnings call this month, easyJet said staff sickness was up to 20% at some bases.
A recent email threatened ‘formal action’ against staff over absenteeism.
“The triggers for formal action are guidelines and we may, if deemed necessary, skip a stage where the absence continues to be poor,” the email said, the Financial Times reported.
“The tone of this email about higher than normal sickness levels amounts to corporate bullying,” Balpa said.
“We urge easyJet to work with us to restore an industry leading ‘win-win’ relationship,” Balpa general secretary, Martin Chalk said.
