United Airlines plans to give Delta some competition by linking the Motor City with San Francisco.
United will begin flying nonstop from Detroit Metropolitan Airport to northern California from June 8 next year.
Delta Air Lines is the only carrier currently serving the route.
Joe Cambron, Detroit Airport’s director of air service development said the new route is testament to the ‘expanding ties’ between Detroit’s automotive manufacturing base and the Bay Area’s hi-tech industries.
"This trend toward great integration of technology and manufacturing is increasing the need for additional service between the Motor City and Silicon Valley," he said.
"We want to make United Airlines the preferred airline for our customers in Detroit," Annette Zappala, United’s director of sales said in a statement.
"United’s new flight to San Francisco will provide business and leisure travelers with convenient access to the Bay Area and easy connection opportunities to business centers throughout Asia."
Detroit Metro Airport handled 33.4 million passengers in 2015.
