US extends Canada, Mexico border closers again
The US land borders with Mexico and Canada will remain closed until at least late December.
Restrictions were placed on general travel across the borders with Canada and Mexico in late March and have been extended every month since.
"In order to continue to prevent the spread of Covid, the US, Mexico, and Canada will extend the restrictions on non-essential travel through Dec 21," Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf tweeted.
It is working with counterparts in the two countries ‘to keep essential trade and travel open while also protecting our citizens from the virus.’
Essential travel and freight movements are still permitted but for not general tourism purposes.
According to the US State Department, nonessential travel includes tourism, attending cultural events, shopping and recreation.
The US has now recoded more than 12 million cases of Covid-19 with every state except Hawaii showing an increase in infection rates.
Leisure trips by air to Mexico are still permitted subject to each airline’s protocols and restrictions in place in destinations.
