Victoria unveils AUD465 million tourism recovery stimulus
After months of lockdown the Victoria state government is hoping to give the ailing local tourism industry the kiss of life.
It is handing out thousands of $200 vouchers for Victorians to get out and explore the state.
The $28 million initiative will make available up to 120,000 vouchers.
It is available to all locals who plan to spend at least $400 on accommodation, entry to tourist attractions or tours across regional Victoria.
Officials said the scheme should be up and running by next month.
It is part of the $465 million Victorian Tourism Recovery Package announced by Premier Daniel Andrews.
It is hoped it will support regional restaurants, pubs, hotels, wineries and other businesses across the state.
"This funding will help tourism businesses bounce back from the challenges of this year – welcoming more visitors and employing more Victorians," Andrews said.
Funding will also go toward improving major tourist trails across the state, building more campsite facilities and financial help for indigenous arts and culture, and food and wine tourism projects.
